- Prepare for the loss of body language.
When you have a telephone interview you lose the ability to communicate to the person interviewing you with body language and eye contact. It can make it a lot more difficult to come across as enthusiastic. This means you need to speak clearly and think a lot more about your tone, to show your interest and capability.
- Beware of talking over each other
You lose the ability to be able to connect with the person interviewing you over a telephone call. It is a lot more difficult to know when they are going to finish a sentence. Make sure you give them the time to finish the question before you respond so you can be sure you know what you are answering.
- Have some notes or your CV to hand.
Don’t have pages and pages available for you to shuffle through because the interviewer will probably be able to hear them. If you have a cue card or your CV it should help to jog your memory when it blank.
- Stand in a place with decent signal
There is nothing worse than being on the phone and the signal dropping out and missing half the conversation. Exactly the same thing applies to a telephone interview. Plan where you are going to take the call or you a landline so you can be sure you aren’t going to lose your signal.
- Stay away from distractions.
Regardless of where you are, whether it is hiding in a meeting room at work or at home in your living room, make sure there is nothing to distract you. Get someone to watch your kids, put away tablets or laptops and turn off the TV. You don’t want to sound disinterested on the phone. Also, make sure where you take the call is quiet, you want them to be able to hear you.
